Talk about taking advantage of the war…

So there’s this guy I know that frequently sends me stuff that I consider spam. Anyway, here is the latest.

This “news” website NewsMax.com really seems to be taking advantage of anti-French sentiment in the U.S.

Before you continue, just take a look at their boycott France web page, then come back and read the following.

Here’s is my reaction:

  1. If NewsMax.com is “America’s news page,” how come I’ve never EVER heard of them?
  2. If I’ve never heard of them (have you?), they probably need a major publicity push if they are going to survive the fierce competition of online news.
  3. This kind of viral email marketing is a great way for them to get millions of hits to their web site and to get their name out to the public. For those who agree with the idea of boycotting French products/services, the web site may even tug at their patriotic hearts, thus deepening their connection with the web site.
  4. A basic tenet of journalism is to present all sides of a news issue to get at the unbiased truth. Now, I don’t for a minute believe that I’ve ever seen an unbiased news cast, but at least they most often make an effort.
    • If NewsMax is a news page, where is the other side of the boycotting issue?
    • Would any self-respecting news agency actually start or sponsor such a clearly one-sided political move as a boycott?
  5. I’m left to believe that the motive of NewsMax is not the pursuit of truth and real news, but rather revenue that will be generated by eyeballs on their web site. No shocker, right? The thing that gets me is that it appears they have completely abandoned all journalistic scruples in the process.

web art…maybe

Just happened across this site this evening. Found it intriguing. Not sure what it is, but it seems like a collection of personal pages of some highly talented/experienced designers/photographers/artists.

I haven’t looked at the whole site, but what I saw I found refreshing.

Why, Apple? Why?

So, it’s cool to be able to say that you have a former Vice President of the United States on your Board, but the news that Apple voted in Al Gore caused my stomach to turn, just a little anway. At least Apple is easier to spell than, ah, potato.

I am, by the way, a die hard Apple fan. I do nearly all of my web production work on one. I also use it to manage my business. The Windows computer I have I use for cross platform testing of web pages as well as for connecting to the occasional remote MS SQL database.

And, Chey is finishing her Masters thesis with the help of her Apple iBook.

How To Lead a Rich Life

Okay, honestly, I don’t actually read Fast Company often. But, I was at ephilosopher.com and followed a link to another article on Fast Company.

Anyway, the point is, this is another interesting article “How to Lead a Rich Life.” Scroll down to the end of the article for some interesting tidbits, but really the whole thing is worth reading or skimming at least.

For you readers familiar with biblical principles of wealth and happiness, you’ll probably see research cited in the article that agrees with ago old wisdom. For instance, Proverbs 18:22 (NIV) reads, “He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the LORD.” Researchers cited in the article put a $100,000 per year value on being married. That is just one of many such interesting similarities.

A rather unique blog —

A rather unique blog — thehomelessguy.net
The web log of a man who has been homeless, on and off, for about 20 years. Posts from a public library where there are computers with Internet access. Offers another perspective on the homeless. Thanks to Scott Schopieray for forwarding the web site to me.

I am alone.

Okay, so that’s a little dramatic.

Chey and Lila are down in Richmond, Indiana for a week and a half. They are staying with some friends of ours (they also have a two-year old). Chey is on spring break (she teaches at Lansing Community College), and she is taking this opportunity to hole up in our friend’s guest room to compose the remainder of her Masters thesis.

Which leaves me here at home for that period of time. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with all the free time. Well, I better plan it before it fills itself up.

Tri-state road review

Yesterday I was driving around the area where Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana meet. Some roads were I96 and highway 20 (is that an Ohio highway?). Anyway, my review is that roads in Michigan are, in general, bumpier than in Ohio or Indiana. Not so nice to drive upon.

Why the difference? Is it weather? Funding for road maintenance? I only have guesses.

So, with the ditching of the frames came a bit of a prettying up for this page. Note the background image in the lower-left. Those are actually some photoshopped leaves from our plant, George.

We’re expecting, by the way…

For those who haven’t heard yet, we are expecting our second child. Due date is August 10th.

We’re scheduled to go camping up north the week before that, so that could be an interesting trip.

Great post from Noel. Gas

Great post from Noel. Gas rage…conflict, drama, and a let down at the end. Go to Noel’s page to check it out. Look for Gas Rage (at the top today) and choose option 3.
