If I owned a Mexican restaurant…

I was eating at Panchero's a few days ago and I heard someone ordering a burrito. When the employee asked the customer if he wanted hot sauce on it, the guy said, "Have any super-hot sauce? Something under the counter?"

That would be awesome. If I ran a Mexican restaurant like that, I'd keep some Dave's Insanity sauce or something like it under the counter. I might pour the sauce into a small, dented, tin canteen, just for the effect.

That'd stir up some word-of-mouth marketing.

Photo: MSU Writing Center crew from way back

MSU Writing Center crew from 1996

MSU Writing Center crew from 1996

Chey showed me this picture a day or so ago. I think Jill Pennington (shown in the photo, middle row, second from the right) lent it to her. It was weird to see—it is from a completely different time of life. A good time, but very, very far removed from now. It even pre-dates Chey.

I'd try to name all the people, but I'm embarrassed to say I don't remember all the names. Some I see are Mark Hara, Brad Kik, David Mosher, Sharon Thomas, Jill Johnson (now Pennington), Julie Bevins, Aimee Brazil, Laura Julier…and many others who I remember, but whose names escape me. It has been so long.

So, anyone from the MSU Writing Center who remember the names?

Incidentally, this photo was taken in a small enclosed garden inside of Bessey Hall on MSU's campus. I'm guessing that it was taken in Spring of 1996. Give or take a year.

Don’t be passing up good…

Don't be passing up good jobs just because you lack the appropriate education. — From a spam message about enrolling for some sort of education program.

I guess they are trying to write to their audience's level.

Removing words from the Microsoft Office Custom Dictionary

In Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Entourage, or PowerPoint, when you do a spell check, you have the option to add a word to the custom dictionary.

This is helpful, for instance, if your name is odd, like "Davin." To stop my name from always appearing when I run a spellcheck, I just clicked the "Add" button in the spelling checker dialogue box to add it to the custom spelling dictionary.

So, adding words is easy. A question from a PowerPoint class today was, "How do I remove words from the spelling dictionary?" In this particular case, someone added a misspelled word and wanted to get it out.

Well, here's how.

On Windows, go to Start » Search and type in CUSTOM.DIC. Make sure that you are looking for hidden files as well.

When it comes up, open the file in a text editor like Notepad. You'll see a list of words that are considered okay. To remove one, simply delete that line of the text file and save the file.

That's it.

On Mac OS 10.x, use Spotlight (the built-in search tool) to look for "Custom Dictionary". The file will most like be in /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/

Open that file in a text editing program (BBEdit or TextWrangler are nice. You can probably also use TextEdit.) Again, delete the offending lines and save the file.

Hey look, Lee and me

Photo of Lee Allis-Hayes and myself at the World Usability Day event at the MSU Union Building.

The photo linked to above was taken by Betsy Weber. Betsy is the "Chief Evangelist" at TechSmith. I think that's a fun title. It's not just a job—it's a calling.

Lee, also from TechSmith, and I seem to run into each other at usability-related events. Though, the first time, we met by the trains in the children's section of the East Lansing Barnes and Noble book store. With our kids, of course. Choo choo.

[mutter]

You know when you have those moments when you have a rush of thoughts and ideas that go so fast and there are a few that you really want to remember but when it's all done there's this mental let-down when you realize you lost them all?

MSU Usability & Accessibility Center

Anne Hunt (co-worker) and I just went for a tour of MSU's Usability & Accessibility Center, which is housed in the Kellogg Center on campus.

Wow, they really did it up. From the ergonomics of the furniture and room layouts to the technology used to record audio, video, and motion screen captures, it all looks great.

The challenge before them now is to be self-funded within a year or so.

Part of that challenge is that they need to charge for their services, but there are usability practitioners out there who do usability research, but for practical reasons, use "discount" usability methods. Which work quite well, but you lose the high-quality video deliverable. In some cases, that can be worth the rental and/or conuslting fees.

In other cases, the extra cost would mean that usability research doesn't get done, which is a worse situation.

Anyway, it seems like their market is a little tough.
